JIM TRAINER'S GUEST POST OF THE WEEK, Introducing Christia Madacsi
Today's guest post comes from Christia Madacsi, poet, writer, and creativity coach. You can find her at Thank You for Being here on Substack.
FIRST, A NOTE
One of the things I've discovered about having a poetry practice – this habit of writing multiple mornings a week for more than a decade – is that I've inadvertently created a journal of my life. My poems are artifacts from specific moments, points of focus, ways of thinking. They track my career, my travels, relationships, and my learnings as a mother.
This poem is about my daughter, who started middle school this year and turned 12 just now. It's called "Individual."
INDIVIDUAL
It's quiet now, now she's gone
Made her way to the corner
where the systems of time
will pluck her up, move her on,
propel her forward in a long-held
practice of catch and release
When she later returns, citing
stories from her day, else falling
into silence, into retreat, I'll be
reminded how I can't guess at
what fills her thoughts, only look
for missing arrows, signs of those
shot and those endured, at what
delights her heart that goes unsaid
Remarks that filter to the surface
are only one small piece of the living
she knows, the hours she fills well
beyond me in the system we chose
to abide, and whatever she thinks,
my part now is but to bear witness
and watch her evolution at play
